In addition to programming contributions, a variety of MetSoc / COM 2017 social activities will be organized. Activities include the MetSoc Awards Banquet, Historical Metallurgy Lunch and the Student Activities.

Welcome reception

All delegates are invited to attend the Welcome Reception Sunday evening to network and meet old friends. Come and enjoy a complimentary drink and hors d'oeuvres. 

Monday, August 28

Historical Metallurgy Lunch-featuring the Fathi Habashi Lecture

The Historical Metallurgy Committee of MetSoc will host a lunch on Monday featuring guest speaker John Marsden, President of Metallurgium  (biography) presenting “A Brief History of Cyanide – Nature’s Wonder Reagent”. Purchased tickets are required.

Student Industry Mixer

Representatives from industry and students are invited to meet informally at the mixer on. The event is free for students and industry delegates are required to rsvp via an invitation sent by MetSoc. We announce the COM poster winner and draw participation prizes. The MetSoc Video Chapter Challenge winning team also gets to present their video during the cocktail. 

Pyromet Historical Metallurgy Pub Night

Join us at our informal pub night where we will present a historical metallurgy talk by none other than Sam Marcuson, Marcuson and Associates. The evening will include a tour and tasting at a local brewery. More details to follow when registration opens.  Purchased tickets are required.

Hydrometallurgy Section Luncheon

The Hydrometallurgy section of the MetSoc of CIM will have their annual technical section luncheon where a special presentation by Michael Collins of Sherritt International will be featured. He will speak on the Development of Autoclave Technology (see abstract). Purchased tickets are required.

MetSoc Awards Banquet & Reception

On Tuesday, the Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM will honour its outstanding members by presenting the MetSoc Awards.  A three course meal with wine and reception is included with purchased tickets.   Ticket prices have been subsidized with the help of our sponsor Mintrex.   Your host for the evening is CBC news anchor, Suhana Meharchand.

Enabling Metallurgy Luncheon

 The Enabling innovation symposium will offer a luncheon where guest speaker Bo Pelech, will speak on “On the Front Line of Innovation”. The lunch will be the occasion to discuss the morning session.  Bo Pelech works as Strategy, Consulting and Facilitation at Purchased tickets are required.
