Thank you from the Conference Chair!

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who made the 2017 conference of metallurgists a success.

See the photos from the event!

The contributors to this success were the 800 delegates which included 255 speakers and 43 posters. Among the presenters there were 2 plenary speakers and 22 invited keynotes.

A special shout out to all the people who reviewed papers and organized and chaired sessions. Thanks again to sponsors such as Mintrex, Barrick, Goldcorp, Joe Zhou Mineralogy, PLA Process Analyzers and Sherritt International. For more detail on sponsors go to the sponsorship page of this website.

Nathan Stubina gave a standout plenary introducing all of us to the topic of Innovation. Sam Marcuson, as well as giving us a glimpse into all the work that he has done on the Legacy Project, presented at the Wednesday Innovation session and helped to arrange two historical presentations. Everyone is invited to go to the following link where they will find the videotaped interviews forming the Legacy Project.

Although COM 2017 primarily hosted both World Gold and Nickel-Cobalt it was much more than that. There were excellent sessions related to Mineral Processing, Materials Manufacturing Materials Corrosion, Light Metals and Environmental studies. The conference was capped off on Wednesday with well attended sessions on “Enabling Innovation” and “Women of Innovation” A special thanks to the people at CMIC who collaborated on the “Enabling Innovation” session.

Next year MetSoc will be heavily involved in the preparation of three conferences. Boyd Davis will be collaborating with personnel from TMS and SME to organize Extraction 2018. Elvi Dalgaard will be working with TMS, AIST, ACerS, and ASM to make COM 2018 a part of MS&T 2018 in Columbus Ohio and Mary Wells with Mathieu Brochu will be preparing for ICAA16 (International Conference on Aluminum Alloys) in Montreal June 17-21. For details on these conferences visit our metsoc.org page.

Sincerely,
