Event Recap

On behalf of the Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM, I am pleased to have been conference chair of the 54th annual Conference of Metallurgists (COM 2015) held at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, August 23-26th, 2015. The theme of the conference was "Sustainability in Metals and Materials Processing and Use". The conference drew about 800 people and the sessions and events were all well attended. A unique aspect of this conference was a special one day “Women of Impact” symposium held to honor women who have made substantial contributions to the Canadian metallurgical, materials and mining industry.

We were also delighted to co-host the first America’s Conference on Aluminum Alloys (AMCAA) with its focus on the aluminum alloys used in transportation. Issues around sustainability of both metals and materials manufacturing and use were woven into the conference technical symposia and were opportune areas to explore as we enter a global era of material constraint.

The annual COM's main purpose is to provide a forum for sharing knowledge and meeting colleagues personally and professionally. COM 2015 had three honorary symposia dedicated to people who have made substantial contributions to our field. Two of the honorary symposia celebrated the academic and research achievements of Professor Torstein Utigard (University of Toronto) and Professor David Wilkinson (McMaster University) and the third symposium, named after Lucy Rosato, who was an industrial leader in hydrometallurgy, explored issues of sustainability in the hydrometallurgy field. The poster session and expanded trade show offered opportunities for delegates to have technical interaction with other attendees and many of our undergraduate and graduate students attended the conference.

I would like to thank all the attendees, organizers and contributors for their support. It was an honor Chairing COM 2015; meeting students who are the future of our profession, sharing knowledge and experiences with colleagues, all while meeting old friends and making new ones.
