Conference Overview

  Vladimiros Papangelakis

The city of Niagara Falls hosted the 51st Annual Conference of Metallurgists (COM 2012) held in conjunction with the 42nd Annual Hydrometallurgy Meeting.

The technical program featured six Symposia: Clean Metallurgical Processing, Corrosion, Pressure Hydrometallurgy, Rare Earths, Sustainability Through Mining, as well as Water, Air and Land Sustainability Issues in Mining (WALSIM II). Five of these Symposia produced proceedings volumes whereas all six were available on a CD distributed to participants. The symposium on Rare Earth Elements was organised for the first time and was very well attended. The rare earth metal recovery rush, along with the need for recruitment, training and sustainability in the industry dominated the discussions. .

The Conference program also featured a trade show, short courses, technical tours, student activities, and a companion program. Four plenary presentations addressed issues spanning from current challenges in our complex global economy/society, climate change, environment and sustainability to the needs for training and innovation for a resilient global economy of the future. A Historical Metallurgy luncheon focused on the beginnings of the nickel industry in Canada in the 20th century.

The Conference theme, Metallurgy and Materials Impact on Society, was chosen in order to provide an opportunity for reflection on what is the contribution of our profession to society - not always evident in the eyes of the public. It was about the continuous contribution of metallurgy and materials to the advancement of the quality of our living, technology and civilization. The conference attracted about 700 delegates from 34 countries exceeding attendance expectations by 40%!
